TRAIL TIPS
What to do if you swamp your ATV!
By Nick Dionne
Once your ATV is out of the water;
- Your #1 priority is to check your oil. If your oil looks like it always does, you're doing okay. However, if your oil looks light gray or cream colored you need to remember to refrain from revving up your bike once you get it going. When you get home you "need" to change your oil and filter as many times as needed until your oil is back to normal.
- Next you need to check your airbox for water. If there is water in your airbox, take out your filter and get as much water out as you can. Next drain out the rest of your airbox using the drain plug at the bottom. If there is no water in your airbox then you can put your cover back on.
- Now you should turn off your gas and drain out the bowl of your carburetor by loosening the drain screw on the bottom of the carburetor. Now turn your gas back on and wait approximately 10 seconds and repeat the process. You should do this 2 to 3 times just to make sure there is no water in your fuel.
- Next, empty out your tailpipe of any water. You can do this by tipping your ATV on its back end or by pulling a plug on your tailpipe if your model is equipped with one.
- Now try to start your ATV. It might start hard and it will run poorly for a short time, but it should clear up eventually. If your bike won't turn over, you could have water in your combustion chamber. To fix this you need to take out your spark plug and let the bike turn over until no more water comes out of the spark plug hole. Dry off your spark plug well or replace it if your have another one. (Remember it might start really hard and run rough.) The only way to stop the rough running is to drive it.
If your ATV won't start after doing all of this; repeat the process once again. If it still won't start - call a tow truck!
